๐ Key Concepts
โฆ Magnets attract objects made of iron, nickel, cobalt (magnetic materials)
โฆ Every magnet has two poles: North (N) and South (S)
โฆ Like poles repel; Unlike poles attract
โฆ A freely suspended magnet always points North-South
โฆ Magnetic materials: iron, nickel, cobalt; Non-magnetic: wood, plastic, glass
โฆ A compass uses a small magnet to find direction
โฆ Magnets should be stored with keepers and kept away from electronic devices
โฆ If a magnet is broken, each piece becomes a complete magnet with N and S poles

Q1
Fill in the blanks.
ANSWER
| Statement | Answer |
| (i) Magnets attract objects made of ______, nickel, and cobalt. | iron |
| (ii) A magnet always has ______ poles. | two |
| (iii) Like poles ______ each other. | repel |
| (iv) A compass has a small ______ inside it. | magnet |
| (v) A freely hanging magnet points in the ______ direction. | North-South |
Q2
Write True or False.
ANSWER
(i) A magnet can attract wooden objects. FALSE
Wood is non-magnetic.
(ii) Like poles of magnets attract each other. FALSE
Like poles repel; unlike poles attract.
(iii) A compass needle is a small magnet. TRUE
(iv) A broken magnet loses its magnetism. FALSE
Each piece becomes a complete magnet with both N and S poles.
Q3
Classify as magnetic or non-magnetic: Iron nail, Plastic ruler, Steel spoon, Glass bead, Nickel coin, Rubber band, Cobalt ring, Paper clip.
ANSWER
| Magnetic | Non-Magnetic |
| Iron nail, Steel spoon, Nickel coin, Cobalt ring, Paper clip (iron/steel) | Plastic ruler, Glass bead, Rubber band |
Q4
What happens when two magnets are brought close to each other?
ANSWER
Case 1: When unlike poles (N-S or S-N) face each other โ they attract.
Case 2: When like poles (N-N or S-S) face each other โ they repel.
Remember
Unlike poles attract, Like poles repel.
Q5
How does a compass work?
ANSWER
A compass has a small magnetic needle that can rotate freely. Since a freely suspended magnet always aligns in the North-South direction, the compass needle always points North. This helps us find direction.
Q6
What happens when a magnet is broken into two pieces?
ANSWER
Each piece becomes a complete magnet with its own North and South pole. We cannot separate the two poles of a magnet โ poles always exist in pairs. No matter how many times you break a magnet, each piece will always have both poles.
Q7
How should magnets be stored? Why?
ANSWER
- Store magnets with keepers (iron bars) across their poles
- Keep bar magnets in pairs with unlike poles together
- Keep away from electronic devices, CDs, and cards
This is done to preserve magnetic strength and prevent damage to electronic items.
Q8
How can you make a magnetic compass at home?
ANSWER
- Take a bar magnet and stroke a steel needle with it 30-40 times in one direction.
- Place the magnetized needle on a small piece of cork or thermocol.
- Float the cork in a bowl of water.
- The needle will align itself in the North-South direction.
