What this Class 9 Maths PPT covers

Algebraic expressions, terms, variables, coefficients and constants; degree of a polynomial; linear, quadratic, cubic and constant polynomials; finding the value and zero of a polynomial; and forming linear equations from word problems.

Linear growth, decay and graphs

Linear patterns with a constant difference, linear growth and decay models (pocket money, plant height, recharge balance, auto-rickshaw fares), polynomials as input-output functions, and straight-line graphs of y = ax + b with slope and y-intercept explained visually.

Also useful for exam practice

The slides support Exercise Sets 2.1 to 2.6 and the end-of-chapter questions, including graphing parallel lines and finding a polynomial from two given points.

Common mistakes covered

  • Never forget the negative sign in coefficients — in x⁴ − 3x³ + 6x², the coefficient of x³ is −3, not +3
  • Degree = highest power of the variable, NOT the coefficient
  • Parallel lines must have EQUAL slopes but DIFFERENT y-intercepts
  • A constant polynomial like −9 has degree 0
  • Lines of the form y = ax (where b = 0) always pass through the origin
