Why Do You See Floating Specks in Front of Your Eyes?

📅 August 30, 2026 • By sumeetsahu1

Why do you see floating specks in front of your eyes? Those tiny transparent dots or wiggly threads drifting across your vision are called eye floaters — and they are not outside your eyes. They are shadows cast by tiny protein clumps floating inside the jelly-like fluid that fills your eyeball. In this post, we explain exactly why do you see floating specks in front of your eyes and what they really are.

Look at a bright white wall or a clear blue sky. After a few seconds, you might notice them — tiny transparent specks, squiggly threads, or cobweb-like shapes drifting slowly across your vision. Move your eyes to chase them — they move away. Look away — they drift back. What are these things? And why can you never catch them? 👇

These are called eye floaters — and they are not outside your eyes. They are tiny clumps of protein or fibres floating inside the jelly-like fluid that fills your eyeball. You are literally seeing your own eye from the inside.

What is inside your eye?

Your eyeball is not hollow. Most of it is filled with a clear, jelly-like substance called the vitreous humour. This gel keeps the eye round, lets light pass through cleanly, and holds the retina (your light-sensing surface) in place.

When you are born, the vitreous humour is perfectly clear — like clean glass. Light passes through it without any interference, and you see a clean image.

Over time, tiny fibres of collagen that make up the vitreous begin to clump together. These clumps are too small to see directly — but they cast shadows on your retina. And shadows on your retina look exactly like floating specks in your vision.

Why do they move when your eyes move?

Floaters are suspended inside the vitreous gel. They are not attached to anything. When your eye moves quickly, the gel moves — and the floaters drift with it. When your eye stops, the floaters keep moving for a moment (like objects floating in water when you stir it), then slowly settle.

This is why floaters always seem to drift away when you try to look directly at them — the moment your eye moves to focus on them, the floaters move too. You can never catch them because you are the one causing them to move.

What you see What it actually is
Tiny transparent dots Small clumps of collagen protein
Squiggly lines Long collagen fibres tangled together
Cobweb shapes Larger clusters of fibres
Ring shapes Vitreous gel peeling away from retina

Why are they more visible against bright backgrounds?

Floaters are transparent — they have almost no colour. Against a complex background (a crowd, a forest, a detailed image), your brain filters them out automatically. But against a plain, bright background — a white wall, a clear sky, a white exam paper — there is nothing else to process. Your brain has no other visual information to prioritise, so the faint shadows of floaters become visible.

This is also why you notice them more when you are staring at something blank — like a plain ceiling or a computer screen with a white background.

Are floaters dangerous?

Type Meaning Action needed
Few, occasional floaters Normal — everyone has them No action needed
Floaters since childhood Normal aging of vitreous No action needed
Sudden shower of floaters Could be retinal tear See a doctor immediately
Floaters with flashes of light Possible retinal detachment Emergency — see doctor now

You are not seeing things from outside.

Do floaters ever go away?

Most floaters do not disappear — but your brain learns to ignore them over time. The brain is remarkable at filtering out constant, unchanging visual information. After a few weeks or months, most people stop noticing their floaters entirely — even though they are still there.

Think of it like a fan sound in a quiet room. When you first notice it, it seems loud. After a while, your brain filters it out and you stop hearing it — even though the fan is still running at the same speed.

🌟 DID YOU KNOW?

There is a scientific term for the experience of seeing your own eye floaters — it is called myodesopsia. And there is an even more fascinating related phenomenon called blue field entoptic phenomenon — if you stare at a clear blue sky, you may see tiny bright dots moving rapidly in curved paths. Those are not floaters — those are actually white blood cells moving through the tiny capillaries in front of your retina. You are literally watching your own blood flow.

Kisi bright white wall ya saaf neeli sky ko dekho. Kuch seconds baad — woh dikhte hain. Chhote chhote transparent specks, wiggly threads, ya cobweb jaisi shapes — aankhon ke saamne dhire dhire drift karti hain. Unhe pakadne ke liye aankhein ghuma lo — woh bhi ghoom jaate hain. Yeh kya hain? Aur inhe pakda kyun nahi jaata? 👇

Inhe eye floaters kehte hain — aur yeh aankhon ke bahar nahi hain. Yeh tiny protein ya fibre ke clumps hain jo tumhari aankhon ke andar bhari jelly-like fluid mein float kar rahe hain. Tum literally apni aankhon ko andar se dekh rahe ho.

Tumhari aankhon ke andar kya hai?

Tumhari eyeball hollow nahi hai. Iski zyaadatar jagah ek clear, jelly-like substance se bhari hai jise vitreous humour kehte hain. Yeh gel aankhon ko round rakhta hai, light ko saaf guzarne deta hai, aur retina (tumhara light-sensing surface) ko jagah par rakhta hai.

Jab tum paida hote ho, vitreous humour bilkul clear hota hai — saaf sheeshe ki tarah. Light bina kisi interference ke guzarti hai, aur clean image dikhti hai.

Samay ke saath, vitreous ko banane wale collagen ke tiny fibres clump hone lagte hain. Yeh clumps seedhe dikhne ke liye bahut chhote hain — par woh retina pe shadows dalte hain. Aur retina pe shadows bilkul waise dikhte hain jaise aankhon ke saamne floating specks.

Aankhein hilaane pe yeh kyun hilte hain?

Floaters vitreous gel ke andar suspended hain. Kisi cheez se attached nahi hain. Jab aankhein jaldi hilti hain, gel hilta hai — aur floaters uske saath drift karte hain. Jab aankhein rukti hain, floaters thodi der aur hilte rehte hain (jaise paani mein floating objects jab hilate ho), phir dhire settle ho jaate hain.

Isliye floaters hamesha drift ho jaate hain jab seedha dekhne ki koshish karo — jis pal aankhein focus karne ke liye hilti hain, floaters bhi hilte hain. Inhe pakad nahi sakte kyunki tum hi inhe hilaa rahe ho.

Jo dikh raha hai Actually kya hai
Tiny transparent dots Collagen protein ke chhote clumps
Wiggly lines Lambe collagen fibres tangled saath
Cobweb shapes Fibres ke bade clusters
Ring shapes Vitreous gel retina se peel ho raha hai

Bright backgrounds pe zyada kyun dikhte hain?

Floaters transparent hain — almost koi colour nahi. Complex background ke against (bheed, jungle, detailed image), brain automatically filter kar deta hai. Par plain, bright background ke against — white wall, clear sky, white exam paper — process karne ke liye aur kuch nahi. Brain ke paas prioritise karne ke liye koi aur visual information nahi, toh floaters ke faint shadows visible ho jaate hain.

Isliye plain ceiling ya white background wale computer screen ko ghoorte waqt zyada notice hote hain.

Kya floaters dangerous hain?

Type Matlab Kya karna hai
Thode, occasional floaters Normal — sabke hote hain Kuch nahi karna
Bachpan se floaters Vitreous ka normal aging Kuch nahi karna
Achanak bahut saare floaters Retinal tear ho sakta hai Turant doctor ke paas jao
Floaters + light flashes Retinal detachment possible Emergency — abhi doctor ke paas jao

Tum bahar se kuch nahi dekh rahe.
Tum apni aankhon ke andar dekh rahe ho —
fibres ke tiny shadows
jo tumhari eyeball ki jelly mein float kar rahe hain. 👁️

Kya floaters kabhi jaate hain?

Zyaadatar floaters disappear nahi hote — par tumhara brain samay ke saath unhe ignore karna seekh jaata hai. Brain constant, unchanging visual information filter karne mein remarkable hai. Kuch haftey ya mahine baad, zyaadatar log apne floaters notice karna band kar dete hain — chahe woh abhi bhi wahan hain.

Aise samjho jaise quiet room mein fan ki awaaz. Pehli baar notice karo toh loud lagti hai. Thodi der baad brain filter kar deta hai aur sunna band ho jaata hai — chahe fan same speed pe chal raha ho.

🌟 DID YOU KNOW?

Apne eye floaters dekhne ke experience ka ek scientific term hai — ise myodesopsia kehte hain. Aur ek aur fascinating related phenomenon hai — blue field entoptic phenomenon — agar saaf neeli sky ko ghoorte ho, tiny bright dots curved paths mein rapidly move karte dikh sakte hain. Woh floaters nahi hain — woh actually white blood cells hain jo tumhare retina ke saamne tiny capillaries mein move kar rahi hain. Tum literally apna khoon flow hote dekh rahe ho!
