The history — how it started
Early maps from different civilisations put different things at the top:

The man who changed everything — Ptolemy
Around 150 AD, a Greek-Egyptian scholar named Ptolemy wrote a book called Geographia — one of the most influential books in history. In it, he placed North at the top of his world maps.
Why North? Ptolemy lived in the Mediterranean region. Most of the known world — Europe, Asia, the Middle East — was to his North. Placing North at the top made his maps feel natural and logical for where he lived.
His book was forgotten for centuries — then rediscovered during the Renaissance and printed across Europe. His North-at-top convention came back with it.
Mercator sealed the deal — forever
In 1569, a Flemish cartographer named Gerardus Mercator created the most famous world map in history — the Mercator Projection. It was designed for sailors to navigate the seas. It put North at the top.
This map was used by sailors, explorers, and governments across Europe. It was printed, copied, and distributed worldwide. By the time the world had standardised printing and international communication, the Mercator map was everywhere — and North at the top was simply assumed to be correct.
