Why Do We Get Hiccups — and Why Do They Stop?

📅 September 6, 2026 • By sumeetsahu1

Why do we get hiccups? A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm triggered by the vagus nerve — and it is actually an ancient reflex inherited from our fish ancestors 375 million years ago. In this post, we explain exactly why do we get hiccups, what causes them, and why they stop on their own.

Hiccup. You didn’t plan it. You can’t stop it. You try holding your breath — sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. You try drinking water — sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn’t. And then, just as suddenly as it started — it stops. No warning. No reason. What exactly is happening inside your body — and why has this been happening since before humans even existed? 👇

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of your diaphragm — the dome-shaped muscle under your lungs — triggered by the vagus nerve. The sudden intake of breath causes your vocal cords to snap shut, producing the “hic” sound. It is an ancient reflex that your body inherited from fish — 375 million years ago.

What is the diaphragm — and what goes wrong?

Your diaphragm is the most important breathing muscle in your body. It sits below your lungs, shaped like an upside-down bowl. When it contracts — pulls down — your lungs expand and you inhale. When it relaxes — pushes up — you exhale. It does this automatically, around 20,000 times a day, without you thinking about it.

Hiccups happen when something irritates the vagus nerve or the phrenic nerve — the two main nerves that control the diaphragm. When these nerves are irritated, they send an accidental signal to the diaphragm telling it to contract suddenly and violently — even when you are not trying to breathe.

This sudden contraction sucks air in sharply. Your vocal cords — caught off guard — slam shut. The air hits those closed vocal cords at speed. The result: hic.

What irritates the vagus nerve?

Trigger Why it irritates the nerve
Eating too fast Air swallowed with food stretches the stomach, pressing on the diaphragm
Hot or spicy food Temperature change irritates the vagus nerve directly
Fizzy drinks Carbon dioxide bubbles expand the stomach rapidly
Sudden excitement Emotional stress can trigger the vagus nerve
Alcohol Irritates the oesophagus and stomach lining near the diaphragm

The evolutionary origin — fish breathing

This is the most surprising part. The hiccup reflex is believed to be an evolutionary leftover from our aquatic ancestors — 375 million years ago.

Our earliest ancestors were fish-like creatures that had both gills and primitive lungs. To push water over their gills, they needed to close a flap in their throat while water flowed in — exactly the motion of a hiccup. Close throat → pull water in → close throat again.

As animals evolved from water to land, the gill-breathing mechanism became useless — but the nerve circuit that controlled it remained. Today, when your vagus nerve fires accidentally, it runs that ancient gill-breathing program — and you get a hiccup.

Every time you hiccup,
your body is running a program
written 375 million years ago
for a body that breathed underwater. 🐟

Why do hiccups stop on their own?

Hiccups usually stop because the irritation that triggered the vagus nerve resolves — the stomach settles, the temperature normalises, the food moves on. Once the irritation stops, the nerve stops firing incorrectly, and the diaphragm returns to its normal rhythm.

Most hiccups last 5 to 30 minutes. If they last more than 48 hours, it can indicate a medical issue affecting the vagus or phrenic nerve — and a doctor should be consulted.

Do home remedies actually work?

Remedy Does it work? Why
Holding breath Often ✅ CO₂ builds up, resets breathing rhythm
Drinking water slowly Sometimes ✅ Swallowing repeatedly resets vagus nerve
Being scared/surprised Sometimes ✅ Adrenaline surge can reset nerve signals
Breathing into paper bag Often ✅ CO₂ increase resets diaphragm rhythm
Eating sugar Rarely ✅ No clear mechanism — mostly placebo

🌟 DID YOU KNOW?

The world record for longest hiccups belongs to Charles Osborne of Iowa, USA — who hiccupped continuously for 68 years, from 1922 to 1990. He hiccupped an estimated 430 million times over his lifetime. Despite this, he lived a relatively normal life, got married twice, and had eight children. His hiccups stopped on their own, one year before he died at age 97.

Hic. Tumne plan nahi kiya tha. Rok nahi sakte. Saansh roko — kabhi kaam karta hai, kabhi nahi. Paani piyo — kabhi madad karta hai, kabhi nahi. Aur phir, jitni achanak shuru hua — band ho jaata hai. Koi warning nahi. Koi reason nahi. Tumhare body ke andar exactly kya ho raha hai — aur yeh humans ke exist hone se bhi pehle se kyun ho raha hai? 👇

Hiccup tumhare diaphragm ka involuntary spasm hai — woh dome-shaped muscle jo tumhare lungs ke neeche hoti hai — vagus nerve se trigger hoti hai. Saansh ka achanak andar aana vocal cords ko band kar deta hai, “hic” ki awaaz aati hai. Yeh ek ancient reflex hai jo tumhare body ne machliyon se inherit kiya — 375 million saal pehle.

Diaphragm kya hai — aur kya galat hota hai?

Tumhara diaphragm body ki sabse zaroori breathing muscle hai. Woh lungs ke neeche baithe hoti hai, ulte bowl ki shape mein. Jab yeh contract kare — neeche kheenche — lungs expand hote hain aur tum inhale karte ho. Jab relax kare — upar jaaye — tum exhale karte ho. Yeh automatically hota hai, din mein karib 20,000 baar, bina tumhare socha ke.

Hiccups tab hote hain jab kuch vagus nerve ya phrenic nerve ko irritate kare — woh do main nerves jo diaphragm control karti hain. Jab yeh nerves irritate hoti hain, woh diaphragm ko ek accidental signal bhejti hain — achanak aur violently contract karne ka — chahe tum breathe karne ki koshish nahi kar rahe.

Yeh achanak contraction hawa ko sharply andar kheenchta hai. Tumhari vocal cords — caught off guard — band ho jaati hain. Hawa un band vocal cords se speed mein takraati hai. Result: hic.

Vagus nerve ko kya irritate karta hai?

Trigger Nerve kyun irritate hoti hai
Bahut jaldi khaana Khaane ke saath hawa nighalna stomach stretch karta hai, diaphragm pe press karta hai
Garam ya spicy khaana Temperature change vagus nerve ko directly irritate karta hai
Fizzy drinks CO₂ bubbles stomach rapidly expand karte hain
Achanak excitement Emotional stress vagus nerve trigger kar sakta hai
Alcohol Oesophagus aur stomach lining irritate karta hai

Evolutionary origin — machli ki breathing

Yeh sabse surprising part hai. Hiccup reflex evolution ka ek leftover maana jaata hai — hamare aquatic purvaj — 375 million saal pehle.

Hamare sabse purane purvaj fish-like creatures the jinke gills bhi the aur primitive lungs bhi. Gills mein paani push karne ke liye, unhe apne gale mein ek flap band karna padta tha jab paani andar aata tha — exactly hiccup ki motion. Gala band karo → paani andar lo → phir band karo.

Jab janwar paani se zameen pe aaye, gill-breathing mechanism useless ho gayi — par us nerve circuit ne jo ise control karta tha, woh bani rahi. Aaj, jab vagus nerve accidentally fire karti hai, woh wahi ancient gill-breathing program chalati hai — aur tumhe hiccup aata hai.

Har baar jab tumhe hiccup aata hai,
tumhara body ek program chala raha hai
jo 375 million saal pehle likha gaya tha
ek aisi body ke liye jo paani ke andar saansti thi. 🐟

Hiccups apne aap kyun band ho jaate hain?

Hiccups aksar band hote hain kyunki jo irritation vagus nerve ko trigger kar rahi thi woh resolve ho jaati hai — stomach settle hota hai, temperature normal hota hai, khaana aage badh jaata hai. Irritation band hone par nerve galat fire karna band kar deti hai, aur diaphragm apne normal rhythm mein wapas aa jaata hai.

Nuskha Kaam karta hai? Kyun
Saansh rokna Aksar ✅ CO₂ build hota hai, breathing rhythm reset hota hai
Dhire dhire paani peena Kabhi kabhi ✅ Baar baar swallowing vagus nerve reset karti hai
Dara dena / surprise karna Kabhi kabhi ✅ Adrenaline surge nerve signals reset kar sakta hai
Paper bag mein saansh lena Aksar ✅ CO₂ increase diaphragm rhythm reset karta hai
Cheeni khaana Rarely ✅ Koi clear mechanism nahi — zyaadatar placebo

Sabse lambe hiccups ka world record Charles Osborne of Iowa, USA ka hai — jinhone 68 saal tak continuously hiccup kiya, 1922 se 1990 tak. Unhone apni zindagi mein estimated 430 million baar hiccup kiya. Phir bhi unhone relatively normal zindagi jee — do baar shaadi ki, aath bacche hue. Unke hiccups apne aap band ho gaye, unke marne se ek saal pehle — 97 saal ki umar mein.
