Why does scratching an itch make it worse? Every time you scratch, your brain releases serotonin to block the pain — but that same serotonin travels to your spinal cord and fires up the itch signals even more. In this post, we explain the full science behind why scratching an itch makes it worse, and what you can actually do to stop it.



You feel an itch. You scratch it. For one second it feels amazing. Then — the itch comes back. Stronger. So you scratch again. And again. And it just gets worse. Why does the one thing that feels like relief actually make everything worse? Your brain is doing something deeply strange. 👇

Scratching triggers your brain to release serotonin — the “feel-good” chemical. But serotonin also activates itch signals in your spinal cord, making the itch more intense. The relief is real — but so is the trap.

What is an itch, exactly?

An itch is not the same as pain. It has its own dedicated nerve fibres — called pruriceptors — that carry only itch signals to your brain. These fibres are different from pain fibres.

When something irritates your skin — an insect bite, dry skin, an allergen — these pruriceptors fire a signal: scratch here. The brain receives it and tells your hand to scratch.

So far, so logical. The problem is what happens next.

Why scratching feels so good — for exactly one second

When your fingers scratch the skin, you are causing mild pain. Your brain responds to this pain by releasing serotonin from cells in the brain stem.

Serotonin is famous as the happiness chemical — it reduces pain, stabilises mood, and creates a brief wave of relief. That is the “aaah” moment you feel when you scratch.

But serotonin does not stay in one place.

The moment serotonin becomes the villain 😈

Serotonin travels down from the brain into the spinal cord. Here, it does something unexpected — it activates the very same itch nerve fibres it was supposed to calm down.

Serotonin binds to receptors on itch-sensing neurons in the spinal cord, and those neurons fire harder. The itch signal gets amplified — not reduced.

So the full sequence looks like this:

Why does it feel impossible to stop?

Because each scratch gives you a tiny burst of serotonin — genuine relief, for just a moment. That mini-reward keeps pulling you back. It is the same mechanism as any habit loop: action → reward → repeat.

Scratching also triggers a small release of dopamine — the reward chemical. So your brain is literally rewarding you for doing the thing that makes the itch worse. You are stuck in a loop with two chemicals working against you.

So how do you actually stop an itch?
