Why Can’t You Tickle Yourself? (Gudgudi)

Why can’t you tickle yourself? Try it right now — tickle your own ribs, as hard as you can. Nothing happens. Now ask a friend to do exactly the same thing, and you cannot stop laughing. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Your brain already knows what is coming. It cancels the feeling before you even feel it.

Here is what actually happens

Every time you move a finger, your brain does not just send the order to move. It also sends a copy of that order to another part of itself.

That part is the cerebellum — the small structure at the back of your brain that handles movement and balance.

Using that copy, the cerebellum predicts exactly what your fingers are about to feel. Where they will touch. How hard. At what moment.

Then the real touch arrives. It matches the prediction perfectly. So the brain turns the volume of that signal right down.

And tickling only works when the touch is a surprise.

Tickling needs surprise.
Your brain cannot surprise itself.

So why can’t you tickle yourself, but a friend can

When your friend reaches for your ribs, your brain has no copy of that order. It did not plan the movement, so it cannot predict the touch.

The signal arrives at full strength. No cancelling, no turning down the volume.

That is why you squirm, laugh and pull away — even when you can see their hand coming.

The same brain, the same ribs, the same fingers. The only thing that changed is who planned the movement.

Scientists built a machine that tickles your palm while you control it with your other hand. Move the lever, and the machine tickles you — but with a tiny delay. Add just a fraction of a second, and the prediction stops matching. Suddenly you can tickle yourself.

Jab bhi aap ungli hilate ho, dimaag sirf hilne ka order nahi bhejta. Wo us order ki ek copy apne hi ek dusre hisse ko bhi bhejta hai.

Wo hissa hai cerebellum — dimaag ke peeche wala chhota bhaag, jo movement aur balance sambhalta hai.

Us copy se cerebellum pehle hi andaaza laga leta hai ki ungliyan kya mehsoos karengi. Kahan chhuengi. Kitni zor se. Kis waqt.

Phir asli touch aata hai. Andaaze se bilkul match kar jaata hai. Toh dimaag us signal ki awaaz dheemi kar deta hai.

Aur gudgudi hoti hi tab hai jab touch achanak ho.

Gudgudi ke liye surprise chahiye.
Dimaag khud ko surprise nahi kar sakta.

Toh dost kare to kyun hoti hai

Jab dost aapki pasliyon ki taraf haath badhata hai, dimaag ke paas us order ki koi copy nahi hoti. Usne wo movement plan hi nahi ki, toh andaaza bhi nahi laga sakta.

Signal poori taakat se pahunchta hai. Na cancel, na awaaz dheemi.

Isiliye aap machalte ho, hanste ho, peeche hatte ho — chahe unka haath aate hue saaf dikh raha ho.

Wahi dimaag, wahi pasliyan, wahi ungliyan. Bas ek cheez badli — movement plan kisne ki.
