Chapter 12 of the new NCERT Class 8 Science textbook (2026โ€“27 syllabus) explains how nature maintains balance through interconnected habitats. From forests and ponds to farms, every ecosystem has living and non-living parts that depend on each other. The chapter uses the real example of elephants entering villages due to shrinking forests to show how disturbing one part of nature affects everything else.

Habitat: Biotic and Abiotic Components

Biotic Components (Living Factors)

These include all plants, animals, and microbes in a habitat. Different organisms sharing the same space use resources differently โ€” some are active by day, others by night โ€” allowing many species to coexist without competing directly for the same resources at the same time.

Abiotic Components (Non-Living Factors)

Air, water, soil, sunlight, and temperature make up the abiotic part of any habitat. Food Chains and the Role of Decomposers

Within every community, energy flows in a fixed order: producers (like grass) are eaten by herbivores, which are eaten by carnivores โ€” this sequence is called a food chain. When plants and animals die, decomposers such as fungi and bacteria break down their remains and return nutrients to the soil. Without decomposers, dead matter would pile up and nutrients would never recycle back into the ecosystem, which is why this chapter treats them as equally important as producers and consumers.

Elephant Corridors: Nature's Balance Disturbed

Deforestation and changing rainfall shrink elephant habitats, forcing them into farms and villages in search of food and water.
